AGIA MONI MONASTERY

Agia Moni monastery is located just outside Nafplio, in the area of Aria, on a hillside with stunning views over Nafplio. The lush plants, trees & flowers in the courtyard are tended by the friendly, quiet nuns and their wonderful greenery is reliant on the famous natural spring found very close to the monastery itself. Bishop Leo of Argos and Nafplio donated money for the construction of the monastery, build around 1150, which today consists of a beautiful church (which has been renovated very recently), smaller chapels and living quarters for the nuns. The church is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi, the spring or source of life and it is believed to be the spring where the goddess Hera annually renewed her virginity. A word of warning at the end: If you need to ask for directions, be aware that the name of the monastery is pronounced Aya Mohní. Moní (with ou-sound) is something you definitely should not ask directions for in Greece.

THE SAINT DIMITRIOS KARAKALA MONASTERY

Moni Karakala is located not far from Nafplion and close to the village of Agios Adrianos. The name Karakala is believed to come from the word "Xirokasteli" meaning castle fortress, which is in keeping with the history of the area and the word "Kouroukoule" is the translation of this word in Turkish, that with hardly any alteration has stuck until today. The Karakala Monastery played an important role during the revolutionary years and particularly during the siege of Nafplio when it was used as an arsenal and safe haven the fighters. The original building is thought to have been built at the beginning of the 11th century, but, at the beginning of the 19th century, a large part of the monastery was destroyed by fire. Part of the salvaged materials were used inthe building of the Ottoman mosque in Nafplion's Syntagma Square. Nowadays, the nuns in residence take care of the monastery, preserving its historical character and the five churches Saint Paraskevi, Saint Irini Chrisovalantou, Panagia Portaitisas, Saint Nektarios and Osios Ephraim of Syros.
