Sparta is the capital of the prefecture of Laconia in Southeastern Peloponnese. The city of Sparta is located 306 km southwest of Athens or Athens airport.
The 2.5 hour route from Athens airport to Sparta will take you through the 6 km long – artificial – Corinth Canal. At the Corinth Canal you will have a 15-minute break for refreshments, coffee, or souvlaki straws and amazing photos of the 79-meter-high bridge that connects the Peloponnese to mainland Greece.
Sparta
Sparta was named after the wife of the King of Lacedaemon, Sparta, daughter of Eurotas. The area was first inhabited in the Middle Neolithic Era.
During the Mycenaean era, Helen the Fair, wife of King Menelaus, lived here. Helen, the most beautiful woman of her time, was seduced by Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, with the help of the goddess Aphrodite. Helen followed Paris to Troy and this became the reason for the Trojan War.
Sparta was the Homeland of King Leonidas, who later in 480 BC. together with 300 Spartans fought the Battle of Thermopylae. In this battle, against an immense army of the Persian king Xerxes, they all sacrificed themselves for the freedom and independence of their country.
During the Byzantine era, neighboring Mystras was the center of Byzantine power in southern Greece, first as a base of military power and from 1348 it was designated as the seat of the despotate of Morea.
