The archaeological site lies close to the village of Mykines in Argolis, situated in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese region in Greece.
Mycenae traces its origins back to the Neolithic age around 7000 B.C., but significant artifacts didn’t emerge until 1700 B.C. According to legend, Perseus, son of Zeus, enlisted the help of the Cyclops to construct Mycenae. His lineage ruled the city for three generations, with Eurystheas being the last, meeting his demise in battle without a successor. Atreus, son of Pelops and father of Agamemnon and Menelaus, was then chosen as the next ruler.

Upon Atreus’s passing, Agamemnon ascended to the throne of Mycenae, while Menelaus became king of Sparta. Agamemnon famously led the Achaeans (Greeks) during the Trojan War, sparked by Paris’s abduction of Helen, Menelaus’s wife, with the aid of Aphrodite.
The citadel of Mycenae is nestled between two hills, Profitis Ilias (805m) and Mount Sara (660m). The current archaeological site, dating back to around 1350 B.C., features Cyclopean Walls and the iconic “Lions Gate,” adorned with sculptures of two lions symbolizing strength and dominance. Beyond the walls lay a residential zone, alongside nine dome-shaped tombs, notably the renowned “Treasury of Atreus.”
Today, Mycenae is a UNESCO World Heritage site and ranks among Greece’s top five historical destinations. It welcomes visitors year-round, with opening hours varying from 8:00 am to 17:00 in winter and 8:00 to 20:30 from May to August, with admission priced at 12 euros.
